email me, and i'd give you first year phototech 101. but for the record, shoot b/w if you want b/w. do you think all those photojournalists are doing colour to b/w conversions to get there prize winning images?
moral? shoot in the medium in which you want the final product to be. dont be a hack. it just lowers photo standards and makes us all look ignorant.

just came across this:

a set of actions to replicate b&w film with photoshop. looks interesting - $8.50 though.

just as a note: never use 'desaturate' in photoshop unless you plan on doing hefty curving/leveling afterwards... even if that is the pattern you're used to... if you want the true feel of a b&w it's worth your while to get used to using 'calculations' instead (in the image menu)

Nobody has mentioned that many professional photographers use different filters *as in filters on their lens, not photoshop kind* such as red filters that help enhance cloud details in skys or different filters that give that black and white infra-red look or super contrast which helps when shooting B&W photos.

above is an example of using an infra-red filter to create an awesome black and white shot

shoot b/w and develop/print yourself, you wont be dissapointed it. I spend a good 8hrs/week in the darkroom for shits and giggles, bear in mind its an expensive hobby though.
