okay, i'm having a debate with my boss... can you help out?
he says that if he gives me a audio cd to import onto my mac and listen to on my iPod is illegal, because of copyright infringement.
i say that it is legal because it is just like copying a cassette tape for a friend - which i remember being legal, but don't have any evidence to support it on hand.
what do you think? any articles that spell it out?

well, you know the record labels aren't gonna take a hit, so i guess that leaves the artists.
- monNom0
no, your boss is right.
but why let that stop you? it's only illegal because the record industry has some powerful lobbiests working on making these laws.
copy away my friend, copy away!

stop talking and go back to work. your irritating me.

hmm its very simple... if you are rich and got money to burn, you can make anything legal or illegal. depends who's got more lawyer fees.

if it is a major label artist, rip away. they don't need the money

it's legal to make backup copies for personal use. i can't find a digital source backing this up at the moment, other than this huge URL:

last i checked its never been legal to copy cassette tapes for someone else.
The only copies you can make is for personal use. You can rip your own cds, or make mix tapes/cds for yourself, but not for someone else.

i think it's ok to like recopy and put music to your ipod. it's only for personal use... dont follow your boss.

If your gf tells you that she has a headache tonight and doesn't want to get it on, are you going to spend time and energy constructing some finely-tuned argument grounded in scientific principles in a futile attempt to convince her that she actually doesn't have a headache? Maybe she doesn't really *have* a headache, but she just doesn't feel like making with the love for some other unspecified reason, but it's easier to blame it all on a headache.
Here's a thought : your boss doesn't want to let you copy his CD and his reasons for not wanting to let you rip his cd don't really matter.
Instead of armchair lawyering yourself to death, why not ask for enough of a raise that you could afford to buy another cd or two?
Or, better yet, since you're already a cd-copying outlaw, just fire up Gnucleus or something and dl the tracks.
