Hey, it looks like I may be moving to Chicago here soon. Can someone give me a better idea of where to start to look for apartments? More specifically, what areas to check out, and which ones to stay away from? Any idea of rent also would be appreciated.
Thanks -
Chip

I guess a lot of thing depend on you personally. How much money you can spend, what you like to do, if you'll have roomates...I was looking for a place this summer and for a 1-2 bdrm place rent was as cheap as $500 in Humbolt Park to $900 in the Ukranian Village. Good neighborhoods (I think)(in decending order) are Ukranian Village, East Village, Logan square, Pilsen, Wicker Park, Bucktown, Parts of Humbolt Park. But these are where I can afford and like. Uptown is nice as well. There are sketchy areas in a lot of neighborhoods, but it all depends on how comfortable you are. Generally these are west and north of downtown.

I just moved from there to NYC. What are you looking for. Trendy? Yuppie? Cheap?
My suggestion would be to get your self the reader and have a go at it.
You can go to the "apartment people" but you would be paying about $100-200 more for your apt than anyone else in your building. But however they do drive you around chicago and show you a bunch of apts.

If you want to live near the lake you'll expect to pay about $600 for a studio apt. that being 10 min. from michigan ave. the more north you go the cheaper it gets.

BTW North east of downtown is very yuppie, Wriggly ville, and lakeview have all the white hat wearing drunk college kids.
I lived in Oldtown where secondcity is, its also north east but its closer to gold coast, so you get more of the older yuppies who actually earned their jettas. Its a very nice and safe area. and close to downtown too. Youll like it even more once summer comes around.

Thanks for the input. I am looking for a loft/2 bedroom place, so that I have enough room for toys, furniture, computers etc. I am going to probably take a trip up there soon and check things out. I am hoping to get a place near some cool restaurants, entertainment and shops (I live in a place that is near that kinda stuff now and have grown accustomed to it). Any ideas?

no no no... go here...

downtown is generally going to cost you an arm and a leg and parking is a b*tch. i would personally go somewhere a little west/north west of the city. franklin park or something. definetely do some searching... a friend found a single bedroom loft, HUGE, two floors, stairs, very contemporary with a garage for $1000. not bad for all thats included. good luck.

i found a place on the gold coast for 1200/mo. 3bedroom... with complex pool and free parking. couple minutes from the mag mile.
called attrium village.
sweet place.also, the best irish pub in the city: Chief O'niels near the corner of addison and elston (north side)
