I guess a lot of thing depend on you personally. How much money you can spend, what you like to do, if you'll have roomates...I was looking for a place this summer and for a 1-2 bdrm place rent was as cheap as $500 in Humbolt Park to $900 in the Ukranian Village. Good neighborhoods (I think)(in decending order) are Ukranian Village, East Village, Logan square, Pilsen, Wicker Park, Bucktown, Parts of Humbolt Park. But these are where I can afford and like. Uptown is nice as well. There are sketchy areas in a lot of neighborhoods, but it all depends on how comfortable you are. Generally these are west and north of downtown.
