i went to a art school for 10 years but we were thaught more traditional art (including the complete history), so not really "design". by the end of that i strated to learn things by myself (flash, ps, dw ...), then i went to college but there wasen´t that mcuh design courses and the main focuss was on application skills and programming. so now i´m my own mentor again but who knows i may probably go back to school one day!?

i've been into design and art my whole life and not until about 95 is when i got to try my skills on the computer. i never took any classes. i just think if you got it you got it. though you can also learn. but come things are just inate qualities;)

Mostly self-taugh in web. Started out product and industrial design in art school. I even designed a pencil sharpener and motorcycle. But friends got me into their companies and I slowly morphed into web and print. Friends taught me a lot too. Especially one homie of mine who couldn't draw for shit, no color sense, form, but could program anything and everything. It was a brave new world after that.

taught myself everything i know...from flash to php and everything in between. mostly due to the fact that i hate asking other people for help with something when i could just do it myself. --> http://www.designlab.org

There are self taught and educated people in every industry - it's nothing new.
THe whole sel-taugh concept makes me laugh - even trained/educated designers are partly self-taught. How many designers do you think went to design school and spent 50% of their time learning in their own time?

I'm self taught.
I think education is a really great tool, if you use it. I've known a few BFAs that produced really horrible work.
Most of the theory etc can be found in the library, I think the main good thing about school is the critique process, and the bredth of projects... you don't go to art school and work on websites the whole time, you diversify.

self taught here, tried to take classes in advanced actionscripting, but walked out as it really taught basic actionsripting.lost my $$ , oh well, self taught is the best way to go for me, school is too slow..

I'm with you, HCP.
I will say, however, that it's entirely benificial to be partially taught by other means. Being put into situations that you wouldn't normally have to design your way out of. Like a crappy job or internship or somethin.
Something to make you well rounded so you stop making 3D abstracts.

I took illustration classes. (All pen and ink - no digital stuff...)
As far as my design stuff, after I got out of college I lied and got a job as a web designer. I basically had to teach myself everything all while pretending to know it for 8 hours a day.
