schjetne, should i hang a sign on my door saying that the carpet smells like pee?

I find any script that's fucking with my browser window annoying.
I have my browser window perfectly laid out as I want it to be, and I don't want anyone messing with it.
The same way I yell at people if they put their greasy hands on my monitors.

paul2358:
Nah you don't have to do that, but if you drag your pee-soaked carpet into MY house, I'd appreciate it if you let me know first, so I could cover my floor with plastic.

Listen, I'm just saying that browser resizing is annoying, and it serves no real purpose (unless the purpose is driving people named schjetne away). Take (again) that idiocase site. The layout is fine. And it looks just as fine without the browser resizing. So why is he resizing it? Tell me, I'm curious.
James, if you're listening, please tell me why you're resizing my browser.

Don't you think it's really such a small annoyance? What's the big deal about taking a few seconds to resize it to the way you want it after you view the site?
- d5ive0
I see your point only if it's not serving a purpose, as does any trendy decoration.
- schjetne0
Ok, what's "decorative" with overriding my system and resizing windows on my computer? I don't really care how long it takes to resize it back again, because it shouldn't be necessary. If you want the browser window to be a certain size, use a popup window. My main browser window _should not_ be controlled by some javascript I never asked for. I'm happy to avoid such sites, only I never know what sites use this annoying technology without a warning. So please people, TELL ME before you start overriding my preferences.
I wouldn't be having this rant if it was a "small annoyance". It's irresponsible design / code, and it's spreading. "Ordinary people" get confused by seeing their browser window bounce back and forth like it's outta control.

If it fits the experience

Ok, d5ive, what if you invited me over for a beer one day, and while you were in the kitchen, I rearranged your entire livingroom. Moved the tv to the other side of the room, the lazyboys behind the couch, and the table out into the hall.
It wouldn't take you long to move it back like it was, but wouldn't you considered me rude for doing it?

depends on what you are using them for, they can be nice for something specific.

I could see resizing a browser as a poor soltuion to a designed layout if it were a commercial site asking you for your time and money.
I don't see the same applying to one's personal space, where you were never asked to go there in the first place(no advertising)
then again... Im a pop up kid and get lovely emails telling me how i should have kept it all in one browser-I don't care.

Fullscreen is much worse than popups, imho. Popups are good for some things, full screen is not. I will close anything that opens full screen, immediately, but a few well placed popups aren't too bad. Esp. for enlarging images. I'd rather get a popup than have to hit 'back' each time I wanted to see something large.

i like the use of popup windows. you dont have to worry about resolution and you can build your site to the T.
- gabe0
i don't mind fullscreen or popups.
-- my browser goes fullscreen...
okay, i check out the site, and then i click "exit" or alt F4-- my browser opens a popup
okay, i check out the site, then click the "X"it's not terribly difficult to do either of the two and if it's how the individual wants me to view his work/website, then so be it.
i don't even mind the resize scripts either, so long as the site looks good within them, (and the reason for the resize becomes obvious.) either way, i'm constantly adjusting my browser's window size a zillion times throughout the day, i'm not so lazy that i can't do it again.
i think people just like to have something to bitch and moan about if you ask me.
- gabe0
seriously, why am i always the last person to post? do i smell that bad?
- schjetne0
I enjoy a good popup any day, but I don't feel I bitch and moan about the resize script because I need something to bitch about. It just annoys the hell out of me, and I have yet to see a site that uses the resize script in a responsible and "good" way.
MatthewCurry, that's one heck of a good site, by the way. And Gabe, you know I've been a fan for years. Both of you, as well as Paul (d5ive) use the popup windows in a nice way. And you're all great designers and illustrators.
- MatthewCurry0
yes, gabe. you smell.
seriously, dude...get on it ;)thanks , schjetne
