i think, if a wine bar has a advert sign boasting "a very interesting assortment this evening" ... that i would be in favor of not going there. the place a few doors down has that currently

Remember to buy something everyone will like... at the moment you're serving it. If it's all night for a few nights, then don't go so big that it will over run the rest of the food/experience.

Americans talking about wine...
- wow, how naive.monospaced
- I'm sorry. But when I think German wine, I only think of overly sweet Rieslings.ETM

I know you pay a lot less for Aussie wines outside Australia (makes perfect fucking sense) but a few recommendations in that price range here, and specific brands if you can get them.
Most 2010 Cabernet Merlot from Western Australia (Margaret River) is great. Big fruity reds. It was a good year, so I'm told.
Reislings from Clare Valley are usually a good bet. A million miles away from that sugar syrup from Germany.
Jim Barry W from any year is an absolute winner if you can get it.And you can't go past a good Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand). Cloudy Bay, Villa Maria, Wither Hills (also make a killer reisling) all very good.

ha, we've just opened some villa maria about an hour ago- it's always been a fav. and for a few dollars less, matua or monkey bay are both great.
- : ) What does a bottle cost you, out of interest? Either the standard or black label reserve?MrT
- matua, mb are usually around 16-18 here. villa & kim crawford are a few more, usually 22-26bjladams
- but it's nice having the taste of home so far away.bjladams
- If that's home then I understand! Did the Qn Charlotte Track last November ... stunning. And then the wines!MrT

On that price brackets there are good Argentine wines. Much better quality than the rest of the South American, and slightly more sophisticated that the Aussie ones.
Most of the enologist working in there have been 'imported' from France or European regions, and due to the land+weather the vines are great. Result: decent affordable wines.

A nice chianti to wash down my regular meal of liver and fava beans.

my favourite wine is Domaine Vincent Dauvissat, Chablis 2004-2005
very smooth and flavorful. more than your $25 per bottle request but it's worth the higher price. around $85 per bottle.
