I reckon it's because modernism is seen as stylish because it has firm artistic and theoretical roots. And is carried on today by Conran et al. It's understood to be good, so it is easy to say, it's good. Your kind of post modern technological style doesn't have an established benchmark (like Bauhaus is for Modernism) so each piece will be heavily critiqued without an understood reference.
Oh, and it's fashion, minimalism is always seen as cool and educated.
