Okay, so I'm a race director - I want to make a soundtrack of tight & smooth songs that you can train to - then I give a copy away to each racer...Anybody know about copyrights for that stuff? I looked online but am having a hard time finding the info...

I men I'm giving the cds away but the racers technically help cover the total costs of the race&CD...

everything is pretty much copyrighted as soon as it is produced. audio especially.
if its for non-profit, and only handing out amongst fellow races, it could be seen as more of making a few mix-tapes for friends then anything to illegal.
though even then, your braking laws.

it's called licensing, whomever's song you wish to use, if it is in fact copyrighted then you must purchase a license. Usually they are as follows:
$59 - One Time Limited Nonexclusive Use
$199 - Unlimited Nonexlusive Use
$299 - Unlimited Exclusive UseThat is what I generally license sound loops for that are custom-made.

if it is older than 50 years to the date, then it is TOTALLY uncopyrighted, so if you wish to use something from 1952/53 go for it, otherwise forget it, you can get busted

jasonx those licensing fees are for songs from artists on record labels or just loops, ive been looking for a long time on a way to get all the tracks of a song for remixing pourposes with no luck, be nice to have some info on that.

JasonX is on the right track, but there is some wrong information here.
The usage price is determined by the artist and can be much more expensive than those numbers.
Copyrights expire after 50 years, but they can be renewed and often are. Don't grab something old and think its your's to use.
You need to go to http://www.ascap.com You should find the resources you need there. They used to have a database of all composers and material. I've been a member of ASCAP for years - they are extremely nice and easy to work with. If you can't find the info on their site - call them. They are a huge help.
