La Haine is a great movie. I'm trying to find the name of the reggae music in the beginning... Does anybody know the name of this track?
Anyway, about Irreversible... I saw other 2 movies from Gaspar Noé, one of them being 'Seul contre tous' and I think he's only able to do shock cinema. So for people that know it's earlier work, there's no surprise here. In fact, he tried to convince Belluci to do an actual porn scene in it, without any sucess... Poor guy ;-p
Shock. Not cinema.

Saw this for the first time last night.
The scene at the S&M club is one of the most disturbing scenes I have ever seen and believe me when I tell you that I have seen every horror movie ever made. The realism is quite shocking to say the least.
I heard about this film after seeing the directors newest Enter the Void.- It's pretty fucked up.kgvs72
- I know there's a cut somewhere and that dude head is a prop but it's done so well that feels like a snuff filmRamanisky2

Congrats to all of the above for discovering indie film world!
Now do watch more indie films, as everyone only talking about Hollywood popcorn shit is really getting sad.
- Ramanisky20
I've been watching indie films along every other genre of film my entire life. This one just happened to have slipped by me.
But you have to admit, there are some real shitty indie films as well.
That last Transformers movie was well .. Hmm... yeah.- Or since Hollywood coined the term "Indie"Ramanisky2
- Take $200k and make a shitty film... Then take $200mil and make a shitty film - those are two different fail leagues.pr2

It's great. But/and extremely disturbing.
- I really have become jaded with violence in film. That scene got to me ... Truly. Left me without breath.Ramanisky2
- Cmon now, what's a little head bashing between friends?********
- Haha ..Ramanisky2
- There was another scene that disturbed me more. But there are several throughout the film that make you go "wtf"Jaline
- Are you referring to the alley scene? Or the more subtle end scene which is really the beginning of the movie.Ramanisky2
- rape...Jaline

Interestingly Daft Punk also did the soundtrack for this film (Irreversible)
- Yeah, that grindy industrial make you dizzy loop works so disturbingly well in that sceneRamanisky2

Irreversible is brilliant. Certainly divided the uppity Angelika crowd when it came out.
Read somewhere that the club scene was a clever use of cgi dubbing.
The pacing; acting; lighting and sound design are beautiful. And set against the hostility of the story is haunting.

the club scene (face smash) was originally filmed using a fake, plastic head, but Noe thought it looked too fake, so it was all CGI, the only CGI shot in the film.
Ironically, I just finished Enter The Void a few minutes ago and came to the qube to comment and saw this thread. Both of these movies are some of my favorites of all time. Complete mindfucks. Enter The Void was completely overwhelming, original, unforgettable and a complete kick in the ass for modern film making. Few directors (if any) have the ability to go to some of these places.
- nice rec for Enter the Void. It'd been on my short list.MrAbominable
- A must see.********
- wrong! the penis was also cgi.bigtrick

Also, Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk did a great job with Irreversible, I read somewhere that they had done some research with injecting straight 50hz sub-bass into a lot of the crazy panning scenes to really make the stomach turn upside down.

Enter the void is such a fucking crap.

the rapist's penis was CGI

I can't help but to respect his take no prisoners approach to film making. Vice has an interview with Gaspar here:

I liked it.

wow. This movie is a complete mind-bender. I watched it all the way through and then had to immediately rewatch the first 1/2 hour because i had to be sure of what I saw.
This movie was fucking great!!!

I suspect Noe to be something of a "women hater"
- Incest seems to be a reoccurring theme in his films as well.dopepope

I watched the Film a couple of years ago now, it's not a bad film, just very disturbing, but there should be films like this that challenge the viewer. Enter The Void on the other hand is an amazing film and shows the director has more to give then just shock tactics.

hated this movie, love the title and end text treatment.
also i agree with thecrab on the last page. C'est arrivé près de chez vous ( man bites dog) and the terrific ' la haine' (the anger) are *much* better movies.

If you liked Irreversible go see I Stand Alone next. It's a window into the mind of a bad man.
a very bad man.- it's maybe his best movie, not much effects, sickening camera moves etc.. but it tells something.********
