Sea Change is brilliant.
Beck is truly a genius.

Never liked Beck. But Sea Change is easily among the best albums this year. I also recommend Peter Gabriel's UP.

anyone knows who did the cover?

I think if the ice caps keeping melting the sea will change. ;)

I think is a fine record- but far from genious- just some simple guitar class 101 chords and some heart...warm for a slow day. I dont understand the fancination with the covers though... color transparent goop...wow.. and we are amazed why?
But Beck is Beck....overall a worthy release.

christo, a song doesn't have to be complicated to be good. there are sooo many 'simple guitar-101 chord' songs out there that are great. Look at the ramones.

I cannot believe the luke warm reception this CD has gotten on this thread, months after its release. I think it's the best release of 2002. It reminds me of All Things Must Past by George Harrison, which to me puts it in the same company as the ceiling of theSisteen Chapel. The arrangements and depth of emotion in these songs are as memorable as most CDs in the last decade. His recent string of Odelay, Mutations, Midnight Vultures and Sea Changes makes his current run as good as most artists' streaks, EVER.

Well i didn't care much for it at first, but it grows on ya. yes it is rather stark, but it has some depth and nice instrumentation. those who don't like it, just give it a few more listens. It is not pop experimentalism, which may be beck's strong point, but he shows another of his strengths which is songwriting plain and simple. After a fe wlistens maybe then maybe go out and get some Nick Drake cds and you will see where he got some of his influence.

I never said a song had to be complicated to be good. Actually most times complication gets in the way. And these songs ARE good- but there is sometime familar, vage, and dry leaking from each one that makes them dull to me after a few listens. Mutations was a better effort I think. Although much respect for this release- for those of you thinking this is a strange twist for Beck, you really need to hear his "pre" Oleday material.... this is how the man started in the first place- without the fancy Nigel touch big money can get you.
Again- good record... but yes luke warm. But who cares what I think... if you love it...cool.

the first few songs are ok but the 2nd half of the cd is not very memorable. a little dull.
though i really liked mutations i can't wait for his next funky cd.

Beck has pealed back all that irony and laid himself bare,
completely unpredictable,
yet after listening to it also inevitable ( = brilliant i.m.o)
I've worn the cd down wafer thin,
heavily rotating in the studio these winter months.Cheers,
