our winters make you appreciate summer.
as for affordable areas to live in...really depends on how much $$$ you pull in. Jamaica Plain is nice, but gentrification is moving full steam ahead. Somerville, parts of Cambridge, parts of Brighton, Hyde Park, East Boston....
or you could live in Allston Rock City if you like drunk frat boys accosting you after midnight.
Also, the snowstorm parking wars are a true american experience...
