And you can learn alot by taking other things apart. Granted, I've been thinking and reading about CSS layout for more than 6 months now on the web, finding good resources, etc. and only this week have started actually doing it.
Trial and error, over and over, and if you get a template, take it apart, mess it up, learn what works and what doesn't. Change things just to see what they do. Combine things together to make a new page on your own and when you've got what you want rewrite all of it so you get used to how to do it.
