In fact there i a lot more to his films than that. A hell of a lot more.
My point about Ridley Scott, that such a thing as "second hand/ third hand" is completely unecessary in the discourse they are telling. Ridley Scott wasn't making a film about the actual crusades - his was a film about what the crusades mean to modern audiences - especially in the context of the US led war on terror. Going back to medieval jerusalem would be meaningless in the historicising post-Hegelian project he was undertaking.
Similarly Trier's films are set in a purely mythical America, that underlies a certain truth, but which he projects through the distorted mirror of popular culture. It is a deliberate aesthetic of his films, such as Dogville. It is like Robert Crumb drawing black women with big fat assses and big fat lips - regurgitating popular culture back at itself. It is not an attempt at the "real".
