IMO, in the US, you can be very happy with a mid-level type job. Like what we do, programming and design. Unless there is a Dr. in the house making tons of cash. hehehe
Overseas, you need to strive to be the best. There are so many more applicants and things are so much more competitive. Especially, places like China and Russia. It's a way out for them, because they aren't compensated the same way we are at a skilled positions.
Regardless of whom is in power. You think things were that different under Clinton or will be that different if Bush died tomorrow? Not so sure.
And as for a detoriating educational system, the kids I talk to know a hell of a lot more about computers and technology than I did at that age and I do just fine. They are bright, it's just their priorities that need adjusted.
