On the imaginet web site hosting section THEY offer you to the opportunity to use your own server - I would say FTP access is probably going to be involved in doing that.
I've had some experience if reluctance to allow FTP - especially when a CMS is involved since once you allow clients direct access to files they often do more than they should.
That said they could be inline for fixing the stuff you break - so they wouldn't be "out of pocket".
In my opinion you need to consider the customer service level of your experience. Are you not being treated well as a client? If not then you should tell them and try to get them to understand your position. If they still won't shift then you need to find a supplier who'll be good to work with.
