I was advised to explain in a document reasons behind a design, why you used a particular colour, type, image, etc etc, apparantly, this is supposed to distill confidence in the client, therefore encourage them not to input with crap ideas.
Think it was Hillman Curtis in his book MTIV.
It didn't work in my case though :(
