Most if not all Graphic Deginers are textural people, obsessed with the feel of things as wellas the craft and care put into pieces. They want to touch it and see it close up. Putting your work behind mylar and it takes the textual sense away.
Further, the black leather case show you put about 30 minutes of thought into your presentation. Think of your portfolioas if you were hired by someone to create it. Would the client be satisfied with the basic leather case?
