Maybe I'm coming into this thread late, but i don't understand why you just don't get a monitor calibrator such as gretag macbeth's EyeOne Display2.

It's pretty cheap and will give you a good color management standard to go by.
It work's really well.
There are others out there of course, but this is one we have been using for a while.
