Basics:
Set contrast to maximum and then adjust brightness so that you can see the difference between ABC and XYZ on this image:
It's not so easy with colors though..
My Sony G420 has a nice "color restoration" function. Colors fade slightly on every monitor, so it's pretty useful. Every few months I click on it and it restores screen colors so they look factory fresh. I have no idea how it's done, but it works.
