Since i don't know what is available in your area, it's hard to say.
If you want to start out with a clean and crisp white wine, ask which Sauvignon Blanc is good.
If you think you'd like a more fruity and floral taste (that actually pairs well with indian food) see if you can find a Viogner.
For a lighter bodied red, that smells great but isn't too much too soon.. try a Pinot Nior (russian river, sonoma, or willamette valley)
If you want something with more bang to it - but still a fairly light body, get a Zinfandel (red not white!!!) this one goes well with everything from Pizza to BBQ, and has a kinda peppery taste.
For full bodied white, with a thick buttery/oak flavor, get a Chardonnay. For a full bodied red try a Cabernet Franc. All Californian too.
For french it's hard to find anyone who can suggest a good bottle. Look for a Morgan, that's an easy one to like. For italian reds go with Nebiolos or Barberas. skip Chianti. I don't like south african, and new zealand whites are good but a crap-shoot. some australian shiraz is as bold as you can get for a red....
i got more if you want.
