    dan_dan & uberdesigner: yes you can shout that people don't get it nor do you have to share it with them how to get it or what's there to get it etc. if that's the function and/or purpose of the site you can do all of that.

    for instance i remember this site for an electonic music act (forgot which one but quit well known) and in order to understand that site you even had to look at the source code which had hidden info regarding the site. functional gui wise? hells no! functional purpose wise? hells yeah!

    all that said designing for designers isn't a waste of time perse. if they are you target audience it's just like any other site / approach.

    version, i understand what you mean but what i'm trying to say that you do a job for a client and not for peer acceptance. if your peers happen to like it as well then that ofcourse is cool but that's an extra not a goal in itself. at all. however i do agree that peer "pressure" can lead to better products / designs because you want to outsmart or be better than your peers. outsmarting your peers != peer acceptance.
