That statement bothers me. I think design is essentially all about communication. Whatever style you use is just icing. A good piece of design isn't going into the history books because it features tightly kerned helvetica bold with the counterspaces knocked out. it has to communicate first and foremost, and if something isn't usable then it's not communicating.
