i've been working in london for 13 months now. the visa thing was and continues to be a gargantuan pain. but it's the same for any country that isn't part of an economic (or commonwealth) network with your own country. if you're not too old, there are programs that sort out the visa for you and then you're free to find work once you're on the soil. but i (and everyone else i know who's working abroad) had to spring for a plane ticket to go to my job interview -- not even knowing if i was going to get the position. when you go initially, you can enter on a tourist visa and go to interviews, etc. anyway.
