I honestly don't feel it's that off-mark, and I'm pretty damn close to the demographic you're shooting for. Of course I over-saturate myself with design, but...
Give it some copy, keep it on the short side, add a few more elements to make the main illy bold but fun. It's a good, very good starting point in my opinion.
I mean, there's no real clear failure in this case since you're just using it for eye-candy. If one/all students don't like it, no money lossed, right? But I don't think that will be the case anyhow.
