XML will more than likely be the basis of any future web advances. the reason being this:
in the near future, digital and analog are going to be combined and work congruently. it sounds nuts, but fiber optic infused digital "paper" is already being tested. so, when information needs to be disseminated quickly over a wide range of media (web, multimeda, pocket PC, cell phones, print) the only viable way to format and sort that information (as of now) is XML.
