One of the earliest models of the creative process is attributed to Graham Wallas, 1926.

The Wallas Model for the Process of Creativity

    1. Preparation (definition of issue, observation, and study)

    2. Incubation (laying the issue aside for a time)

    3. Illumination (the moment when a new idea finally emerges)

    4. Verification (checking it out)

I reckon the above works like this.
    1) Define a project.
    2) Think about it for a while!
    3) Something will hit you!
    4) Refine that something.

    This is definitely true.
