I grew up in that area...
Mountains: The resorts are slammed with church groups from Florida and yuppies from Atlanta. Awesome to hike/camp/mt bike, but i have a hard time going back with all the eco-devestation.
Charlotte: Used to be a large punk scene there years ago, lots of skateboarding, Dave Collier (ex-Burton pro) runs this site http://www.skatecharlotte.com and Dieter Wagner (ex-Burton/Joyride) runs Black Sheep sk8boards.
Beach: Thats 4 to 6 hours depending which one you are going to.
Culture... Suburban upper middle class white folk with lots of rednecks and mid-west transplants. Strip malls, NASCAR, and Bank of America and plan on driving aroud in your car alot.
