what format are his drawings of right now? if they're in vector format then export them from illustrator as an swf or eps (for some reason an Illustrator 3 EPS works best sometimes).
if they're rasterized then open them with photoshop and save to web as a GIF. Optimizing the file type and number of colours is your only way to save on load time.
Have you considered a smart way of preloading the images so that the user isn't staring at a loading screen the entire time?
