I picked up the 300D used for $500 and I'm happy w/ it. Got a sigma 28-135 lens (although I recommend the Canon 28-135 IS) is you have the money for it.
I'm still learning/experimenting w/ all the options, so if you're in my boat, go over the lower model, you prob won't regret it.
