I'll be honest I used to think very poorly of places like Media Temple and 2A.net simply based on price alone. I as well thought the companies just had a bunch of hype behind them. I did some research and found that the current company I blow thousands a year on (Hostway) seemed to be in control on the market after buying out the largest hosting firm in Canada thereby becoming the largest hosting firm in North America. This is why I could not fathom why any other start up company would wittingly charge more when I would think the market would force these costs down. But I must admit, our CEO friend here almost has me sold - then again, that's what a CEO and salesperson is "supposed" to do. At one point I tried to see if they would match what I am paying now and give me the flexibility to develop Flash Com apps without having to take all the server responsibility under our own belt. Nope. I guess it all comes down to who you are comfortable working with and who offers the best support and deals. Make me a better offer and you bet I'd move to a MT or 2A.NET deal.
