the reason css is hard at the moment is becuase firefox is the only standards compliant browser. 5 more years and things will be easier. cant wait for a standard.

Then there'll be CSS4, 5 or 7 incompatibility and hacks, just there will be more browsers and each will behave differently :)Sometimes I think CSS was created and is being advocated loudest among those who know nothing about design. Even Zeldman admits in his book css was created by nerds who didn't care about their site's appearance. I am using tableless CSS with no pleasure. After hours of transforming a table layout into css I consulted a css keen friend. "No, I don't think this can be done this way, you have to prepare the graphic files differently and probably.. rethink the design". Fuck. The reason people have been using tables is that they work so well and are great for the job. I don't buy this "tables weren't supposed to build layout structure". I don't care if they were. Tables provide consistent grid and they stretch in every browser in a predictable way. Add a little css and you will build everything with tables.
My opinion is that separation of content and presentation should take place on the xml/xslt level.
I'm still quite new to "pure css", so maybe these are my skills that need to improve. But I don't trust w3c. They are freaks who push SVG over Flash. Most of css nerds I know still think Flash is a vector animation format.
