I am both a print designer and someone who hires in other designers.
At the end of the day when I am wanting to hire someone it all comes fown to whether their talent matches the job desscription. If they show they can do it, then I choose my favourite by seeing who I got on best with during an 'informal chat' at the end of the interview. I think you can both tell if you will get on/ are on the same wavelength pretty quickly.
That said - the one thing that REALLy pisses me off is sloppy dressing. Our office is informal and we ARE all in jeans, but I wanna see that someone has made the effort and has out on the best suit they own. I expect to be won over in the same way i want the clients to be when they go out to meet them. It's stupid I know, but the guy in the suit always wins over the one trying to be "hip" in his combats....
