when you say you bought both of moocks books a few months ago, do you mean as the definitive guide and as for flash mx the definitive guide...
if so... dont bother reading the first one (as the definitve guide), its geared for flash 5, and the one for mx covers everything plus more that it contains...
finish up mx actionscript by him, and when you understand it (have a good genereal understanding of each chapter, reread if you need to, its worth it) go on to essential as2...
you work through both those books and retain it, and you will be very happy with what you can do...
