Hapeville is a bit odd (and TOO close to the airport) if you ask me... It's got a quaint little downtown strip with a train depot, restaurants, etc... but it is a ghost town. I never see anyone there. Very strange... I wouldn't want to live there.
East Point is definitely up & coming, but not quite there yet. some cool lofts to be had if you look around. It's also very close to the train station which goes directly into the airport. The airport is very close, too... but the train avoids all the parking hassles at the airport... But in general, it's a bit out of the way.
Grant Park is my favorite neighborhood (to live in) I've been to so far. I rented a place for a couple years there (but couldn't afford to buy a decent house there). Very quiet, but close to everything... I had an excellent 2 BR place for $1100/mo... Ria's Bluebird is the place for a tasty breakfast or lunch... I could eat there every day.
East Atlanta is fun, worth a look, but a bit overpriced... and they don't have the cool old Craftsman houses like Grant Park.
You may be hard-pressed to find something good for $700/mo. in a nice 'hood. Remember... this is a much bigger city than Kalamazoo.
