it's the problem with paradigm shifting art and also hyper-realism. it almost cancels out the empathy factor. however, you can view these individual characters more as representatives...perhaps like some japanese cinema, rather than characters you are immediately intended to identify with. different than dancer in the dark which is dripping in empathy. it's a reality, not a screen dream.
