Oh geez. I own all these dvd's but I never watch them. Gotta watch that one soon.
Yeah...I bought it not only because of the director (Lars Von Trier) but also because Nicole Kidman is in it.
People usually either really like it or dislike it because it makes them nauseous.

Forgot to mention that Bryce Dallas Howard (amazing actress and daughter of Ron Howard) will be taking over Kidman's part for Manderlay.
Lars seems to be really hard on his actors.

i liked it really much, although it's kind of hard at the beging, you gradually get going with the mood of the film.
it has some very strong scenes, also.

Von Trier is a twat...He's get's his kicks by creating stories where his heroines gets punished and devoured.

well, not strong in the sense of shoking images, but for example there's a scene were N. Kidman is getting raped, and you can see a couple of meters from that the kids of the rapist playing peacefully...
now that i think about it, it's far more strong seeing it than reading it. =)

I know this thread is a little old, but I finally saw the movie today!
One of my favourites ever! It's amazing. Did anyone else find the ending to be pleasurable? I know it's horrible, but I think that was what Lars was trying to get at.

I liked it. It had all the usual grim woman beating that Von Tier seems to dig but actually gave something back to the lead actress at the end. And yeah.. young Amercians, huh.

imo, all his films are about the way people influence each other in a good but most commonly a bad way. heavy stuff.

i thought it was the dogme camera work that made me nauseous, but ciudad de deu didn't cause any motion sickness with me so i'm starting to think that it's nicole kidman's acting that's to blame.

felt long and i didn't like the ending but one thumb up the concept and a quite interesting theme.

I think the film was wonderful, especially the end. there is so much to grasp of tthat ending.
