I am such a chicken. Last night I take out my girlfriend’s family out for dinner with the intention of asking my girlfriend’s mother permission to marry her daughter.

My girlfriend and I have already been talking about this for several weeks now and I figured asking her mother would be a good first step to marriage.

So I figured I would ask the mother right after everyone was finished with dinner. Throughout the whole meal I’m thinking in my head of the right words to use and what language I should ask her in. Spanish or English? Spanish, which is the language Hilda is most comfortable in or should I ask her in English, the language I am more comfortable speaking in. These thoughts ran through my head the whole time during dinner.

I’m looking at everyone there, hoping they eat slowly so that I can build up additional courage.

They all finished dinner and I suggested they eat some dessert. Again, stalling like a basketball team with a short lead in a close game. To my surprise they agreed and ordered some dessert.

Additional time passes and her youngest sister eats the last of what remains of her traditional Mexican Flan. Everyone else was already done minutes earlier. A short silence comes across the table, everyone had completed dessert and there was nothing else to do or say. This would have been a good time for me to stand up tall and proud and ask her mother for her daughters had in marriage.

So with everyone looking at me as I pay the bill and give the waitress her tip, I stand up and thanked everyone for coming and excused myself to go to the restroom. That was when I whispered into my girlfriend’s ear and told her that I was too much of a chicken and that I’ll have to ask some other time.

    I suck...even in 2005 :(
