If you're looking to paint the exterior, drive around the neighborhoods in your area and find houses that use colors you like. The easiest way too see if a color looks good is to see it in use somewhere else.
As for interior, don't feel pressure to stay in any kind of period style if that isn't your taste. It's your house.
Is your neighborhood all bungalows? Are they painted consistently? Will your new neighbors scoff at you if you choose untraditional colors?
