i agree that everything is subjective to one's taste when it comes to anything that requires an opinion. (technically, nothing "requires" an opinion ;) )...
... but as far as 'art', 'design' and 'architecture' goes... it's all a matter of personal taste. My mom loves old country style... my dad loves western.. both my brothers are smothered in white trash... my aunt and uncle are exceptionally modern in their personal preference....
... all I do is learn from each factor and move forward...
'intellectuals' such as the critics you're talking about need to pull their overly academic heads out of their asses and start examining the real world...
... asthetically - the real world doesn't have the time to sit there and stew over objective bullshit. They're busy dressing the kids for school, taking the dog out and making sure the boss gets his reports on time.
There's such a minority of those w/'appreciation' for something that is finely crafted... and for some reason, we let the critics of such people and their work get to us.
I say.. wake up, hug your pet and children - call your mom and tell her you love her... then do something that suits your subjective desires... and then rinse and repeat if necessary.
