Honestly it comes down to the work you do. If you work on print and web, it may be easier for you to be on a mac. Most printers have both, but I find its easier to be using all of my print and web apps at once on the mac, while switching back and fourth. This is where osx really shines, the working environment is so much cleaner and nicer.

If you are doing video and 3-D then by all means get a pc. The renders will be faster, and there is more support for PC 3-D stuff out there. I have maya on my mac, and was so upset when I found that for their first release of it, the renderer was only single threaded.

As far as speed and all that goes, you may not be able to jockey the thing around to use all of the speed you have. I have a dual 450 g4 at home, and after using my dual 1ghz at work all day, I notice it, but I can still be productive.

If I had it the way I wanted it, I would have an SGI to run maya and flame on, a pc to do after effects and use as a supplimental render machine for the sgi, and a mac to surf on, do print and web design, and use final cut pro. But I don't have 30k floating around to buy hardware with...so I stick with my mac. After all, they are just tools.

A few things to keep in mind no matter what:
Get as much memory as you can afford. Drives and ram you can never have enough of.

Look into getting refurb or demo hardware. Get it from either a certified reseller or the acutal company, and you can save a lot while still having the full warranty and all of the goodies that initially came with the machine.

Finally consider what your friends have, because they will be your first like of support. If they are all pc guys, and you get a mac, they won't be any use to you, and vice versa.
