just my opinion...
if you are in the business of exchanging money for your services, you assume a certain responsibility to conduct yourself in a professional manner.
one of the disadvantages of freelancing is that you must work not only as the designer, but as the project manager, sales team, and owner of a company.
that means analyzing risks and not taking jobs if you don't think they will be beneficial to you in some form or another.
if you do accept a project, you see it through from start to finish, even if you realize halfway through that it's not going to be profitable for you.
or, if you realize that a client becomes difficult to work with, you arrange an agreemnt to cease work on the project.
writing an email like that is unprofessional, regardless of the circumstances.
