if the image is in your template, then there really isnt a whole lot you can do with it.
you could always break the template and then add your hotspots. or make a new template without using that image. then just add it in your page, draw some hotspots and youre done.
not sure about making the navbars skinny. http://www.w3schools.com might be a good place to start looking though.
