I agree with you. There are select artists and labels trying to keep that spirit alive like Stones Throw, DefJux, etc. But I think the difference was the innocence. Back then it was about trying to get the girl or have a good time. Or, in Del's case, about being true to the scene and the artform. Or it was south LA gangster, Like NWA and my other favorite of all time, Ice-T.
Now, for the most part, it's Lloyd Banks tossin' fifties at the camera, or shorties flossin in hot tubs. It doesn't seem like anyone is having any fun anymore...
