Unless they're the first record label to file for nonprofit status with the IRS, non-paying work for "experience" (experience in being swindled ?), "a greeeeaaaat portfolio piece" (sweating your balls off to build a killer portfolio so that you'll be able to compete against your peers for even more awesome non-paying gigs?) , and the opportunity to work on other (nonpaying?) projects in the future .... is pretty much self-defeating. A bunch of free cd/vinyl ? C'mon.
I've got a feeling that the "high-profile independent hip-hop label" in question doesn't give their product away to the public in exchange for good publicity ("if i like the album, i might tell some of my friends about it and I may even allow you to give me more free albums in the future").
Churning out free work is even worse than participating in "design contests" w/re to devaluing your profession and contributing to the widely-held perception that design is a worthless (if it can be gotten for free, after all) garnish. You're just slitting your own (and your designer brothers') throat(s), killing the market.
