Rule No. 1 - Don't design for awards.
YES - recognition/awards are great, but when you start a project by saying "Hmmmmm, what would the judges of Cannes think about this?" - you will lose site of the project objective.
Tell your boss to give you creative freedom to create award-winning work and see what he says.
