used to ride. thinking of getting a bike with some of the profits after i sell my house. anyways... used to ride a cbr 600 f2. i'm about your dimensions too.... almost exact.
depends on what you want to do with the bike. if you just want a commuter cycle to and from work, that will do. BUT, if you're looking to start actively riding to wherever, vacations, weekend 100+ mile rides, you'll regret getting the 250. for one having everyone else with a faster bike will eventually piss you off. get a 600. really they are all nice. honda, suzuki, yamaha and kawasaki (in that order) are what i think are the best to the not as best ya know. ducati and buell have some great 600s but the repairs will be a bit higher.
i just rode a 1500 iron horse over the weekend and even though i did well, the bike rides you, you don't ride it. i've been on a number of 900s and even the suzuki 1000 and i managed well.
later on down the road when you get comfortable on a bike, you could def go up to a 750.
good luck.
oh, if you care... i'm very interested in the monster 900 by ducati. i know a guy who owns a custom bike shop so repairs service wise won't be that expensive, but parts may be.
