A few notes:
Safari has some sort of bug that doesn?t allow it to work (as it seems right now) with php data. I noticed this with the cuban council site earlier today, which uses php. This is probably due in part to the fact that safari is NOT using the shared plugins folder for the rest of the web browsers on osx, so it may not be the same release of the plugin that is on Macromedia?s site. Safari has all of the flash playback embedded in the WebCore portion of the browser code, so its independent of any plugin (but still returns the most current flash release if you check the version using a script...odd) Simply put, if you are running IE, Chimera and Netscape at the same time, they are all using the same plugin to run flash, and if you have more than one instance going on, it will slow down. I have had to close many a Newstoday® window in the background so that I could see what a site was supposed to look like in the foreground, because the small flash objects on NT were causing the animations to lag.
A well known secret is that the osx plugin that Macromedia released is just an os9 plugin that has the carbon library objects so that it will run on osx. Its not at all optimized, and it runs like such.
As for the Macromedia plugin, there was a weblog site I saw recently (not sure if the url) that a developer for Macromedia Flash asking for comments on how to make the plugin better, and asked for specific sites that worked on the PC, but were lagging on the mac. This hopefully shows that Macromedia is actually going to take advantage of the power of osx, and the technologies that are available to them on the platform.
For me, the biggest pain in the ass is that the editing tool, Flash MX runs like crap on my dual processor osx machine, while it runs fine on a $699 bargain basement Dell. Its one thing to know that the work may run a little slow on the mac, while its a slap in the face to have to have the APP run slow while creating work!
Check out www.dnlfipit.com and www.whoisalig.com...both are pretty flash intensive.
