I was in China when this movie came out in January 2002 (so more than 2 and half years now), funny people were selling pirated DVDs right out side the cinemas in Beijing, most Chinese don't go to cinemas as it's 5 times the price of pirated DVDs.
This movie by Zhang Yi Mo (He's the most famous Chinese director, I remember watching his movies when I was a kid) was China's entry / hope to win either Oscars or Cannes that year, but I don't think it did. This was his first kung fu film.
I watched it in both Chinese and English subtile and if only the historical/cultural importance can be understood and appreciated by westerners, it's much more entertaining than just beautiful visuals - oh well, the same could be said with any "foreign" film.
A must see, and iff you can, watch it for a couple of times to really understand the story.
