it's not a question of inventing a detective story [many XVII tales of 'gentleman detectives' already existed].
It's the similarities of the main character [and helper], the analitical logic, assexual nature, love/hate relation with the police department, awkwardness of the crime, the 'eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth' philosophy...
I remember reading 'Morgue' and thinking this seems like a prequel to the Sherlock Holmes stories...
